Physical Properties of the Hope Diamond

  • Weight – 45.52 carats (9.1 g) [as determined by Gemological Institute of America’s Gem Trade Lab in Dec. 1988]
  • Shape – Walnut shape, Horse Chestnut Shape
  • Size – L 25.60 mm X W 21.78 mm X D 12.00 mm
  • Color – Fancy Dark Grayish Blue [as determined by Gemological Institute of America’s Gem Trade Lab]; Beautiful Violet [as described by French Gem Merchant, Jean Baptiste Tavernier];
  • Emission of Red Glow –
    • After being exposed to Short Wave UV Lights, the Diamond emits a Red Phosphorescence [‘Glow in the dark’ Effect]
    • The red glow indicates mix of Nitrogen and Boron withing the stone
  • Grade – VS1 [Check out  the classification of Diamonds here]
  • Cut – Cushion antique brilliant with a faceted girdle and extra facets on the pavilion
  • Chemical Composition – After boring a 1 Nanometer hole is the diamond, the researchers detected Boron, Hydrogen and Nitrogen in its composition
